The United States entered into World War II, the military was in desperate need of airplanes and in a radio broadcast delivered on December 29, 1940 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, Roosevelt promised to help the UK fight Germany by giving them military supplies.
Roosevelt coined the slogan, "The Arsenal of Democracy," to specifically reference America and its industrial machine as the primary military supplier for the war effort. In doing so, Roosevelt turned to the American auto industry, specifically the Ford Motor Company, where Edsel Ford’s pioneering efforts in aviation and hands-on knowledge of mass manufacturing made him the obvious choice to expand airplane production.
In an important piece of history for Detroit, Edsel Ford would build one of the largest airplane factories in the world, the Willow Run Bomber Factory.
Thirty percent of the nation’s war material poured in from one city alone—Detroit. The monstrous, blunt-nosed, four-motored B-24 Liberator would be built at a rate of one per hour, at a faster rate than the Germans could shoot them down thus helping to turn the tide of the air war in Europe.
The Detroit Watch Company commemorates Detroit’s Willow Run history with the introduction of the B24 Liberator Pilot Series of Exclusive Automatic Timepieces.
